Week 11 - Setting Roof Trusses

December 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

HOW’S EVERYTHING GOING WITH THE HOUSE?

The house is amazing.   They are putting in the roof trusses right now.  Hopefully, by the end of the afternoon, the back half of the house will have the trusses on.  We finished the second level walls over the weekend.  That part is now totally framed in.  On the front of the house all of the walls are finished.

HAVE YOU PLACED THE WINDOWS YET?

We’re waiting to place the windows until after we get everything under roof.   The roofing shingles will be in next Monday.  For the tar paper that goes on the roof, we are going to use the heavier 30 lb. paper, so it will last longer.

WITH THE TRUSSES ON, THE HOME MUST REALLY LOOK TALL.

Yes, and when you’re looking out from Sarah’s room or Andrew’s room, it feels like it’s a skyscraper.  And standing where the front door is, it just seems so immense.

Thankfully, John has a great sense of humor, because I was standing in that front door area and I said, “Hey, we ought to go look at some furniture.”  And he cut me quizzical look, like “The roof’s not even on the house.”  But, we ended up going to look at furniture.  We didn’t get anything.  It was just more of a “Let’s placate Melissa’s sense of humor and go look at furniture” kind of thing.   Buying furniture for the whole house is not going to happen.  What’s going to happen is, the furniture that we have in our living room is going to end up downstairs in the rec room.  So, the only new furniture we’re going to purchase is a living room sofa.  And John has never had a recliner, so I think it’s about time he has one.  We just went to see what we should be budgeting for furniture.

ANY MORE NEWS ON YOUR CABINETS?

When I ordered my cabinets I picked out the type of wood and the color of stain that was going to go on them, but I hadn’t picked out any of the amenities that would go on them.  So, I was thinking about things that I wanted in the kitchen, and I always thought it would be neat to have a big, huge drawer for keeping all of the pots and pans.  So, I’m going to have one of those really deep drawers, right next to the stove.  They’ll just build that in.   The other thing is, my mother always had a built-in bread drawer that was really deep, and it had a piece of plexiglass that you could slide across it that would keep the air circulating.  I’m trying to finalize those details to get exactly what I want.  We still have time, because the cabinets won’t come in until after the drywall is in.

HAVE YOU SELECTED A COUNTERTOP YET?

We have not.  I’m trying to get the flooring situation decided.  I’m afraid that if I fall in love with a counter, I won’t be able to find the right flooring.

WHAT ARE YOU THINKING FOR FLOORING?

I’m pushing for wood, or something that looks like wood throughout the whole first floor.  John’s OK with that for the entryway, the kitchen and the hallway, but he really likes carpeting.  So, we’re going to have to come to a happy medium on how we will do it.  Maybe a floor rug in the great room.  We’re still working that out.

WELL, DOES THAT JUST ABOUT WRAP IT UP FOR THIS WEEK?

It does.  We’ll talk to you next week.
